How much is tobacco in Portugal? UK traveller price guide for 2026
Portugal is one of the cheaper EU destinations for tobacco, but prices have moved up since 2023 and the gap with the UK has narrowed. This guide gives you the current 2026 cost, what you can legally bring back, and how to calculate your real saving once you factor in the cost of getting there.
Current tobacco prices in Portugal (2026)
Mainland Portugal applies a national tobacco tax that has risen each January for the past four budgets. As of May 2026:
- Premium 20-pack cigarettes (Marlboro, Camel, Lucky Strike): €5.20–€5.40
- Mid-range supermarket brands (SG, Português Suave): €4.20–€4.60
- Budget brands: from €3.80
- Rolling tobacco 50 g (Drum, Cutters Choice): €11.50–€13
- Rolling tobacco 30 g: €7–€8.50
Madeira and the Azores apply a regional tax discount: expect roughly 8–10% off mainland prices in those territories.
What the UK customs allowance actually covers
Coming back from Portugal you can bring, per adult, duty-free for personal use:
- 200 cigarettes, or
- 100 cigarillos, or
- 50 cigars, or
- 250 g of rolling or pipe tobacco
You can split between categories — for example 100 cigarettes plus 25 cigars. Bringing more is legal but you must declare it and pay UK excise duty plus VAT on the surplus, which usually wipes out any saving.
Is it worth it?
For a single carton of 200 cigarettes, you save roughly £53 versus UK prices (≈ £42 in Portugal vs ≈ £95 in the UK). For 250 g of rolling tobacco the saving is about £25 versus £40+ in UK shops. Worth packing in your allowance if you smoke; not worth a dedicated trip.
Where to buy
Tobacco is sold in tabacarias, supermarket checkouts, airport duty-free, and most petrol stations. Lisbon Portela airport typically prices a pack 5–8% above town centre prices, but the duty-free shop after security offers carton deals (10 packs of 200) at a slight discount over town pricing.
If you bring more than your allowance, you must declare the goods and pay tax and duty on the total amount.
